Carlos Ruiz Happy To Return To MLS

The Philadelphia Union had been on the tail of Carlos Ruiz since the club was inaugurated in 2010.

Regardless of whether the reports were true in the past, the Union’s perseverance paid off when Ruiz signed on as a free agent from Greek Super League club Aris Thessaloniki.

“I’m really happy to be MLS again and with the Philadelphia Union,” Ruiz said Tuesday. “I’m really happy to be back, after a few years playing in South America, Mexico, and Europe. I can bring experience to make us better and better. I’m very excited about the first game against Houston. We will try to start good and play our way. Try to start in the league the right way.”

Ruiz was a late arrival to the Philadelphia Union team with the player only officially being announced on February 22. Ruiz has adapted quickly however.

“After the two weeks spend in Greece we are playing better soccer,” Ruiz said of the team’s recent conditioning trip. “We practice every day and stay in one place. I have only ex-teammate who is Danny Califf so it’s good [to be together]. [Coach Peter] Nowak is very happy for how the team is playing now.”

Saturday night’s kickoff away to the Houston Dynamo will be Ruiz’s first MLS game in nearly three years and the Guatemalan has nothing but praise for Philadelphia fans.

What Philadelphia lacked last season was goals but if Ruiz can stay as sharp in front of the net as he was during his previous tenure in America, then Union fans have every reason to be optimistic about the upcoming campaign.
