Sixers Choke One Away In Washington

The Sixers like to think they have hope because of their young backcourt, but that backcourt’s inexperience contributed to an epic collapse in Washington Tuesday night. The Sixers blew a 17 point lead in Washington, collapsing down the stretch and losing to the Wizards, 116-114 in overtime.

It was their second heartbreaker this season at Washington. On November 2, the Sixers lost in OT, 116-114, after Cartier Martin hit a desperation three-pointer at the end of regulation.

This time out, the Sixers had the game in hand until the backcourt of the future stumbled in the final 10 seconds of regulation. First rookie Evan Turner who scored six points in the game’s final minute, missed two foul shots with eight seconds to go. That paved the way for the Wizards to tie the game and send it to overtime. With three seconds to go, Jrue Holiday committed a foolish foul on Washington rookie John Wall as he shot a desperation three pointer. Wall made all three foul shots to send the game to overtime.

Wall finished with 25 points to lead Washington, all of his points coming after halftime. JaVale McGee had 24 points and 18 rebounds for Washington (5-8).

In overtime, Thaddeus Young rebounded and laid in an Andre Iguodala miss with 14.6 seconds left to give the Sixers the lead. But then Turner lost track of Wizards sharpshooter Nick Young, who drained a wide open three-pointer for the game’s final margin.

Andre Iguodala’s returned from Achilles tendonitis with a strong effort, finishing with 23 points, a season high 11 rebounds, and eight assists.

Elton Brand had 19 points and seven rebounds for the Sixers before getting ejected for a flagrant foul on Washington’s McGee with 3:32 to go. The Sixers led 98-89 at that point.

The loss kicked off a four-games-in-five-nights stretch for the Sixers (3-11). They visit Toronto Wednesday night.
