Report: Phillies Trade Mike Zagurski To Arizona

While it was clear that lefty reliever Mike Zagurski wasn’t in the playoff plans for the Phillies, it’s now clear that he is no longer with the club at all, as the Philadelphia Inquirer reports he was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks for a player to be named later.

The 28 year-old southpaw was one of the three players the Phils designated for assignment last week as they shuffled the roster once the Lehigh Valley IronPigs’ playoff run ended. He had a solid season for the Triple-A affiliate, posting a 2.65 ERA in 54 and one-third innings and he has 365 strikeouts in 296 and one-third career innings in the minors.

His big league numbers aren’t nearly as strong, as his 6.82 ERA in 37 MLB appearances with the Phillies confirms. Zagurski produced promising strikeout rates in both the minors and in his work on the highest level, with a 10.2 strikeout-per-nine innings clip for the Phillies, but his control issues (5.4 walks per nine) kept him from sticking with the big club.

The Diamondbacks might have plans for Zagurski in 2012, but given the timing of the trade he isn’t eligible to make their postseason roster.
