Choose Your Worry As Phils Sit In First Place
The Phillies are in first place by a full game now, but it’s not always sunny in Philadelphia, as the injury bug continues to bite this team.
Pick which injury you’re more concerned about: Jimmy Rollins’ hamstring or Brad Lidge’s elbow. Both could be concerns going down the stretch and heading into this weekend’s series at Citi Field against the Mets.
Lidge complained of soreness in his right elbow earlier this week and was not available Tuesday or Wednesday. He closed out the Phils’ 7-4 win over the Marlins on Monday night.
Rollins got hurt in Wednesday night’s blowout of the Marlins. He appeared to hurt his hamstring running between second and third base in the third inning. He was practically limping home, and the team later called it hamstring soreness.
Can the Phils survive without both Rollins and Lidge? They’ve managed to get into first place in the NL East with a bevy of injuries already – including Placido Polanco playing (and continuing to play) with an injured elbow.
The Phils did get a reliever back on Friday as they activated Danys Baez a day after putting Scott Mathieson on the DL.
A guy who has proven to be amazingly durable goes to the mound for the Phils in the series opener: the usually dependable Roy Halladay. He’ll go up against Mets phenom Jenrry Mejia, who’s making just his second major league start.
But if you’re looking for something to worry about as the Phils sit in first place, look ahead to Saturday, when the Phils will start Kyle Kendrick yet again.
