Phillies Take Series, Tie For Wild Card

In a season rife with inconsistency, Kyle Kendrick somehow comes up with flashes of brilliance.

Sunday night qualifies as brilliant.

Kendrick allowed just one run – a Jose Reyes solo homer – as he and the Phillies beat the Mets 3-1 at Citi Field to move into a tie with the Giants for the NL wild card.

The right-hander scattered six hits in 6 2/3 innings and struck out four, outdueling Mike Pelfrey on a night when the Phils’ offense was clicking just enough. Jimmy Rollins singled, then stole second and third on his way to scoring in the third. After Reyes’ home run, the Phils cashed in with runners in scoring position as Placido Polanco and Carlos Ruiz drove in runs.

The bullpen didn’t falter, either. Chad Durbin and Ryan Madson pitched well, and Brad Lidge put together a 1-2-3 ninth. By the time he induced the game-winning fly out, the Phils had the series victory and were tied with San Francisco for first in the wild-card race.

And in a perfect twist of scheduling, the Giants visit Citizens Bank Park beginning Tuesday.
