James van Riemsdyk Out Indefinitely With Concussion

It was almost going too well. The Flyers were shaking off the injury bug. Concussions to Brayden Schenn, Claude Giroux and Sean Couturier were all recovered from. Now, the bug has bitten again. James van Riemsdyk will be out indefinitely with a concussion, the Flyers announced Saturday afternoon.

Van Riemsdyk, 22, has 11 goals and 11 assists in 37 games for the Flyers this year. He missed five games due to injury that was unrelated to the concussion.

“James was hit in the head in each of our last two games,” said general manager Paul Holmgren in a press release. “He reported yesterday, not feeling like himself. He will be out indefinitely with a concussion.”

He averages 15:10 of ice time this season, but played only 10:32 against the Islanders on Thursday, his second-lowest total of the season.

The hit that initially caused the concussion, while not confirmed, is thought to be from his old college teammate Bobby Butler. Two minutes into the last Flyers home game against Ottawa, Butler’s left elbow caught van Riemsdyk up high and left him down on the ice, needing the assistance of trainer Jim McCrossin. No penalty was called on Butler on the play.

As seen on the video below, Ottawa broadcasters insinuated that van Riemsdyk should have earned himself a diving penalty. Van Riemsdyk did not miss a shift for the rest of the game.

According to a report from The Inquirer Zac Rinaldo will return to the lineup after sitting out the last two games as a healthy scratch. The report also says that Matt Read will take van Riemsdyk’s spot on the third line with Brayden Schenn and Wayne Simmonds.
