Morning Cheat Sheet
Here’s what you need to know to survive water cooler conversation this Tuesday:
1. The Flyers’ Danny Briere was fined $1,000 by the NHL for taking a swing at the Rangers’ Brandon Prust from the bench Sunday night. Scott Hartnell was not disciplined.
2. Chris Pronger’s return is coming soon, though it likely won’t be Tuesday vs. Capitals. Click here for a full transcript of his interview with reporters Monday.
3. There was an internet report that the Flyers told Nikolay Zherdev’s agent they wouldn’t be re-signing the Russian winger. Jay Grossman categorically denied that and said his client was fully committed to the Flyers and NHL.
4. Jim Mora Jr. was considered a front-runner to be the Eagles’ new defensive coordinator. Those plans may be derailed, as he’s reportedly close to accepting the same job with the Broncos.
5. Meanwhile, the Eagles’ old defensive coordinator landed on his feet quickly, as Sean McDermott accepted that job with the Panthers less than a week after being fired.
6. Andy Reid gave McDermott a vote of confidence at a press conference, then fired him. Does that ruin Reid’s credibility? John Miller says it does just the opposite.
7. Andre Iguodala hit a big jumper in overtime to give the Sixers yet another win in a close game as they beat the Bobcats 96-92 in a Martin Luther King Day matinee.
8. Coach Doug Collins says his Sixers are showing “huge growth” recently. Meanwhile, Evan Turner doesn’t care about the NBA rookie game and Andres Nocioni missed Monday’s game with a finger injury.
9. Last Friday featured an odd incident in which it looked like Iguodala elbowed Turner. Video and an explanation of the incident here.
10. Sixers-Bobcats wasn’t the only MLK Day matinee basketball game that featured an exciting finish as Villanova lost to UConn thanks to a jumper by player of the year candidate Kemba Walker.
