Jason Kelce Remains Starting Center

NOVACARE COMPLEX — Jason Kelce did not know what to expect coming off Thursday’s game against Cleveland. The Browns game was thought to be his showcase, and it had its ups and downs.

“In college I knew I was going to start; I knew I was better than the guy in front of me,” said Kelce. “Whereas here, Jamaal Jackson is obviously a proven, outstanding player, so I didn’t even know if I played my best if I’d still be starting.”

But he got the call on Friday from offensive line coach Howard Mudd, who delivered positive news.

“He said, ‘We’re going to keep you in with the ones. Just keep doing what you’re doing, keep getting better, keep progressing,’” said Kelce. “I was pretty happy when he called and told me that.”

Andy Reid confirmed that Kelce ran with the first team on Saturday.

Kelce said that Jackson has been extremely professional throughout the process, and has helped guide the rookie in his development. It is clear, though, that Jackson is not thrilled about being bumped to second on the depth chart.

“The coaches have something in store, I guess,” said Jackson. “Just gotta go with what they say. I feel as though I’m healthy enough to compete and I didn’t have any setbacks, so what can you do?”

Jackson was asked how much he thinks his recent injury history is weighing into the decision.

“It’s probably factoring in a lot,” he said.

Another obvious factor is Mudd, who prefers more nimble linemen. It is not difficult to see the difference between the 6-4, 325-pound Jackson and the 6-3, 282-pound Kelce.

Asked why he believes the coaching staff is starting him over Jackson, Kelce replied: “The best answer I can give to that is just the athletic ability, and the ability to do some things that Jamaal might not be able to do.”

Kelce had a rough time in the early going against Cleveland, which left Michael Vick vulnerable on a few occasions. Both the coaching staff and Kelce agree that the play picked up as the first half wore on, however.

“I had some mistakes but I also had some good plays, too,” said Kelce. “The coaches felt I deserved another shot.”
