Morning Cheat Sheet
Here’s what’s being talked about in Philadelphia sports this New Year’s Eve Friday:
1. Our countdown of the top Philly sports stories has finally reached No. 1. What is it? Check it out here.
2. With Michael Vick ailing, Kevin Kolb is likely to get the start for the Eagles Sunday vs. Dallas. But will it be his last game on the field for the Birds?
3. Sunday’s game is meaningless, so the Eagles can give a lot of players some rest. Probably a good thing, as they’re basically the walking wounded right now.
4. Remarkably, Eagles players and coaches conceded they weren’t ready for the Vikings on Tuesday in the biggest game of the season.
5. Thursday night featured the de facto Big 5 championship game – which Villanova won 78-74 over Temple in one heck of a game.
6. Juan Fernandez was the Owls’ best and worst player at times Thursday night.
7. Peter Laviolette changed his lines around, and the shakeup worked to perfection as the Flyers blasted the Kings 7-4 to end a two-game losing skid.
8. Thursday night in Los Angeles also marked goaltender Michael Leighton’s first start since the disastrous end of the Stanley Cup Finals. It wasn’t a perfect season debut, but Leighton still managed to pick up the win.
9. Back to the Eagles, Derrick Burgess’ second stint in midnight green is over, as he was released Thursday as the team signed defensive end Bobby McCray.
10. And for good measure, here are all the crazy things that happened in 2010 in Philly sports that DIDN’T make our top five. Happy New Year!
