Notes: Akers Misses Practice With Heel Injury

David Akers missed practice Monday with a heel injury, the same ailment that sidelined him for a couple days at Lehigh. Sav Rocca kicked in his place, impressing on-lookers by booting 40-plus-yard field goals through the uprights.

Nick Cole (knee) remained out, but he did get some side work in and appears closer to a return.

“Nick will go out there and push himself through, really, anything. That’s just the way he’s wired,” said coach Andy Reid. “This is me backing off on him. To make sure we keep the swelling out of that knee, that he continues to just rehab it and get that area strong around the knee and then we’ll go from there. Until I feel that – myself and [head athletic trainer Rick Burkholder] – until we feel that that’s where it needs to be, I’m just going to hold back. I know what Nick can do. He got enough work in there.”

Todd Herremans and Jamaal Jackson practiced once again, as the offensive line continues to take shape.

Is Ingram safe?

There is a growing sense that Cornelius Ingram’s spot on this team may be in jeopardy. Though Ingram says he feels good, the product on the field suggests that there are still some hindrances. A slow march back after two ACL surgeries was expected, but can the Eagles afford to put him on the 53-man roster in the interim, when rookie Clay Harbor is serving as the backup?

Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg was asked Monday whether this team needs a prototypical blocking tight end. Mornhinweg got to Ingram last when discussing his options at the position.

“Well I think Brent [Celek] is [a quality blocking tight end],” said Morningweg. “I think Clay [Harbor] has an opportunity. I think [Nate] Lawrie has an opportunity. Lawrie’s got some skill and ability there. Cornelius [Ingram] is still nicked just a little bit, he’s working through that. He’s a tough guy, he’s working through it. He’s got some skill and ability. I think we’ve got some guys here that have a great opportunity ahead of them. They’ve got a lot of work to do ahead of them in a very short period of time, so we’ll see how that thing ends up.”

Back at Lehigh, Mornhinweg said he didn’t feel comfortable dubbing Harbor as his No. 2 tight end just yet, allowing for the thought that the Eagles just don’t feel as stable as they’d like at the tight end position behind Celek.

If Ingram isn’t far enough along to help ease some of their concerns, then the Eagles will have to begin looking at other options.
