Syracuse Dismantles Villanova For Another Big East Loss

The disappointment continues on the Main Line for the Wildcats. ‘Nova could not keep up with the No. 1 team in the country, despite a second-half push. They dropped their fourth conference game of the year 79-66 to the Syracuse Orange.

Philadelphia native Dion Waiters torched the Wildcats for a game-high 20 points — he averages 12.5. Scoop Jardine, another Philly boy, added eight points, including a 30-footer he nailed at the buzzer signaling halftime.

Villanova’s leading scorer, Maalik Wayns, was held to just three points. He has averaged close to 17 all season. All three points were foul shots; Wayns was 0-for-7 from the field and 0-for-3 from beyond the arc. Mouphtaou Yarou picked up a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds; he lead ‘Nova in both categories. JayVaughn Pinkston and Dominic Cheek each had 12 points as well.

Villanova outscored Syracuse 42-36 in the second half, but that comeback wasn’t enough to save the Wildcats. Their only Big East win thus far came against DePaul last time out. At 1-4, only Pittsburgh is worse in conference play.
